“Chasing Coral” will debut on Netflix and in theaters in New York and L.A. July 14. This doc by Jeff Orlowski, which was included in the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, captures the effort to invent a time-lapse camera to show the process of coral bleaching. Learn more about the film here.
If you’re in NYC, you might want to check out “The Penguin Counters” documentary, making its premiere in the city April 21 in celebration of World Penguin Day. The film follows an effort to record the impact of climate change and ocean health by counting penguin populations in Antarctica.
The three episodes transport viewers into the depths of the ocean, coming face-to-face with a giant blue whale in “theBlu: Encounter”; witnessing undersea migration firsthand on the edge of a coral reef in “theBlu: Reef Migration”; and venturing into the deepest, darkest regions of the ocean in “theBlu: Luminous Abyss.”
Citizen science is growing as smartphones, computers and mobile technology are enabling regular folks to help scientists advance knowledge. A new documentary series on this phenomenon called “The Crowd & The Cloud” will air on PBS stations. It will premiere on PBS’s WORLD Channel April 6 at 9 p.m. EST.
